I was driving down Woodward last night, and some people in a van caught up to me asking about my car. I said it was an '84, and then the driver, and older man, said "so it's got the 4.4L then.". I responded "but it's a 944" to which he responded "I know".
We all know this is a 4 cylinder car, so the question is: what car has a 4.4L something(V8 presumably) and looks like a 944? I thought he has mistaken mine for a '84 928, but that had a 4.7L V8 but I'm not sure what else comes close?
Any guesses? And happy Easter Sunday!

He might have just said the wrong engine by accident.
How much attention does the 944 get?

The 968 has 3.0 and it is the closest thing to your 944. The 928 is a completely different shape.

or is he just merely thinking the 44 part of the 944 means the engine is a 4.4?
![]() 04/05/2015 at 19:48 |

Might be people thinking that the digits indicate the engine size. 944 = 9 4.4.

Probably just had no idea what he was talking about/was attempting to troll.

But it's a 9 series with a 4.4L right?
![]() 04/05/2015 at 19:49 |

BMW had a 4.4L V8 that they put in some 5 and 7 series... not exactly 944 doppelgangers though.

With the squealing AC belt I have currently, more than you'd think... (O_o)
Every time I get moving, it's like a bycicle.

Hadn't considered that.

must be.

Haha, do people take pictures/look at it often?
![]() 04/05/2015 at 19:57 |

Look, yes. Pictures, not sure or probably not.

He could've just had no idea what he was talking about, and though 944=4.4, like 328i=2.8.

Y notttt! I'd take pictures.

it's the most plausible thing I can think of, he might be vaguely aware of a Porsche from that era to have a v8 and thinks it would be that based on the 44

It's not that big of a deal. But I have noticed that modern 911 owners so far(997s and up) haven't noticed me, but I don't really think the ones I've seen are enthusiasts or care that much about the brand.
![]() 04/05/2015 at 20:10 |

That's the most plausible idea so far.
![]() 04/05/2015 at 20:12 |

Booooo! Do you wave to other Porsche owners?
There does seem to be a good deal of people who just buy them as a status symbol and could care less about the cars or their history.
![]() 04/05/2015 at 20:15 |

I kinda have this intuition on who's an enthusiast and who's driving a status symbol. So for now, I only wave to classic Porsche drivers, and 996 drivers.

I had people taking several pictures of my 924 when we were bringing it home. Of course, it also has a loud exhaust and it pops and crackles a bit on overrun, so it draws quite a bit of attention.

Nice, for me it's pretty easy to tell. Being honest here, anybody driving manual transmission on a car that could be considered a status symbol is usually an enthusiast. Not always, but a good chunk of the time.

Only my friends have taken pictures that I've noticed. I've had only one person walk up to my car and analyze it. My car is much quieter though so there is that. And it seems most people around here are only interested in the newest thing out most of the time. It takes a lot to stand out here. People are much more interested in gawking at the newest Ferrari that they've already seen on YouTube or the interwebs than a car that you seldom see actually driving.

I mean I like PDK and would most definitely take one if given the chance. But some people are enthusiast and either haven't got the time to learn, or have some sorta disability that makes driving manual a hazard or unfeasible.
![]() 04/05/2015 at 20:23 |

That's true and PDK is a really great system. Love throwing a car through the gears so quickly. It is getting harder to tell who's an enthusiast though.

One of the biggest things that grabs attention is my license plate, which expired 37 years ago.
![]() 04/05/2015 at 20:33 |

Confused it with BMW's classic naming scheme is my guess. 9 44 = 4.4 L.
![]() 04/05/2015 at 21:33 |
|
Yeah I'm still curious about that. How's that work?
![]() 04/05/2015 at 21:33 |

Maybe he was making assumptions based on BMW/Mercedes nomenclature...
![]() 04/05/2015 at 21:36 |

That's the general consensus. It'd be badass to have a bitchin 4.4L 4 banger. ;)

100% he thinks the 928 is the 2.8 liter model.
I remember meeting a guy with a box stock carbureted '87 Trans Am who was bragging it had 305hp. Bah.
![]() 04/05/2015 at 22:22 |

Basically, it takes the place of the antique plate that I have to carry in the car with me. The number on the 78 is also registered to the car as well.

On woodward, but you were up at MSU recently.
Where in the world Michigan do you and the 944 reside?

I think he's near Travis and I :)

I do! Gonna post them all tomorrow. :)
